Some materials used for upcycle design are more appealing and intriguing to me than others. One of them is an inner tube. That’s because this material is so sturdy, rugged and looks amazing. It’s used for different upcycle products like a lamp, bag or accessory. And those of you who are regular visitors form the start of upcycleDZINE know that I like sturdy bags.
One of my favourite inner tube bag designers is Innervy with it’s very stylish designs. And now I’ve stumbled upon another fantastic bag designer that uses inner tubes to create amazing bags and backpacks.
Very durable, functional and cool looking rolltop backpack
And in this post I want to show you the backpack that immediately caught my attention. It’s a rolltop backpack called ARCE made out of inner tube by Nukak. This is a Spanish company founded in 2001 in Barcelona. The company started making various products like accessories and furniture, but eventually focused on bags and some accessories. What stood out were the hand-made bags from advertisement flags. And later on they took on inner tubes, creating several beautiful bags.
Rolltop backpack Arce is a perfect, very functional and durable companion to carry everything you want. There are two versions, one made out of black bicycle inner tube and the other made out of truck tire inner tube. The bag is waterproof and very resistant to whatever it encounters. The top of the backpack is a rolltop that’s easy to close with an adjustable strap. The top closure is very spacious and has a zipper.
Arce is equipped with several waterproof pockets, interior lined with nylon, and inside a zipped pocket and two opened closures. To make carrying this backpack a comfortable experience Arce has a foam back with breathable fabric, two adjustable handles to carry it on your back and a top handle.
“Our products have a second life born out of investigation and development of different types of materials recovered. We analyze their properties, characteristics and adapt them to the best form and function possible. Thanks to our passion of this work, Nukak will continue to surprise in the future with new products and new materials.”

The entire production is an artisan process and made by hand in Barcelona. The team of Nukak collects useless, discarded objects and stores them in their warehouse. After classifying the objects according to their characteristics, they are cleaned. The production is done in CIRE (Center for Reinsertion Initiatives) workshops and in small local workshops where very experienced artisans sew their product with all their care. And this ‘care’ is showing in the details of these cool looking backpacks.
