Safety First! That’s what we think of when we get into our car and fasten the seatbelt. And that seatbelt is the key material for the furniture collection from Phillips Collection. The ‘Seatbelt Furniture‘ collection is designed by Thai designer, Nuttapong Charoenkitivarakorn, as part of a larger collection of work, entitled, ‘The Sculpture’.
Nuttapong works with influences important to modern Thai culture. In this instance, the Seatbelt Furniture collection is made by using scrap material from a local manufacturer by people in a local Thai village. By combining the two worlds of modern manufacturing and Thai craftsmanship Nuttapong references historical Thai culture while at the same time using material from a manufacturer integral to Thailand’s modern economy.
Furniture with an elegant twisting contrast
The inspiration for using cotton straps came after Nuttapong saw them used for seatbelts and bag straps. He designed a steel and wooden frame which he then wrapped in cotton ‘seatbelt’ in a criss-cross pattern, one Nuttapong found more fresh than the basic checkerboard design. The backside of the chair is just as stunning as the the front. Braided all the way to down. The straps have one color on either side of the fabric, which gives a striking contrast of color as the material twists, almost like a corset.
If you have seen the movie ‘The Hunger Games‘ you may have noticed the beautiful chairs in the dining room scene. The scene featured the Seatbelt Chairs.
The recycled seatbelt line includes Seatbelt Bar Stools, Seatbelt Benches, Seatbelt Dining Chairs, Seatbelt Lounge Chairs, Seatbelt Ottomans, Seatbelt Stools and Seatbelt Wall Decor.
