Whenever I toss a box into the recycling bin, I have to cut it into pieces or shred it to make it small enough to fit the bin. This makes me feel kind of awkward. And especially with this SAMSUNG cardboard box that the TV came in. It was big, colorful, and made of thick cardboard. So I couldn’t bring myself to cut this beautiful cardboard box into small pieces and throw it away. I had to do something useful with it. Yes, I realize it sounds strange, but I truly felt compelled to do that. I’ve been playing around for some time now with pieces of old cardboard and this time I knew I had to create another cardboard lampshade.

Impressive cardboard lampshade
It took some time before I started this new upcycle project using a SAMSUNG cardboard box. This article’s lampshade is called BoxCrown XL. The design is slightly similar to that of BoxCrown. This version has a different design, fewer ribs, and is a lot bigger at 80 cm wide and 40 cm high. Is bigger also better? What I do know is that it is much more impressive.

What work is needed for this upcycle project?
The creation of a lampshade like this involves printing several template parts and tracing them onto cardboard. Next, take a utility knife and cut out all the paper parts and notches. After this, grab a fretsaw and saw all parts. And finally, you can start assembling your lampshade and admire your finished upcycle design lampshade.
100% handmade
BoxCrown XL is suitable for both hanging lamp and floor lamp. In this case, I used it in combination with a floor stand made of pallet wood and a little square piece of MDF I had lying around. Simple and very adjustable. For these photos, I used a Philps Hue light bulb. This one is the white version that lets you set the desired warmth and brightness of the light. Great lamps because they use very little energy, don’t get hot, and are dimmable. This lamp is handmade without the aid of any electrical device. I know one could use a [laser] high-precision cutter that would result in a cleaner cut, but that would take the fun out of creating it by hand. And you could easily make this lamp out of MDF [Medium-density fibreboard], but that wouldn’t qualify as upcycling. So that’s why it has been made this way.

All in all a great and satisfying upcycle project. If I would make another one it wouldn’t have the same print and colors. This lampshade is therefore a unique item. A real one-of-a-kind!
