The experience of reading a book is unique. No e-reader, tablet or any other digital device can match that same experience. It’s about holding a book in your hand, feeling the cover and even smelling the ink and/or paper. Taking time to sit down and read a story in a book or search for information is something fewer and fewer people do.
Like I’ve said before, the traditional book industry is under pressure and the way we experience a book is changing, all because of the digital age we’re living in. And people are getting rid of old books. So I can imagine used book stores end up with an enormous amount of books. Throwing away books is not what one wants to do.
Take a seat on stacked books
And that’s where upcycle design shows it’s distinctiveness. Because it shows very creative solutions to give those beautiful old books a second life. Not only decorative, but also functional.
As a regular visitor of upcycleDZINE, you may have noticed several fantastic upcycle design ideas using old books. Some examples are Light Book, Atlas Book Lamp or Hardback Book Lamp. And I’m glad to add another great and original idea to that collection. The design is called ‘BookPouf‘ and is created by Dutch company Sledgecorner, founded by Anton Sleeuwenhoek. BookPouf arose because Sledgecorner noticed that many old books were and still are thrown away by libraries and thrift stores or cleaned up after the closing of a flea market. They felt a need to save this flow of books and give them a second life in the form of the BookPouf.
Each BookPouf is unique due to all different stacked books, resulting in beautiful and colorful patterns. It’s is equipped with a comfortable seat and underneath you’ll find solid wheels which makes this piece of upcycle design furniture very agile. BookPouf uses deprecated books from the Culemborg Library and Books 4 Life Utrecht. Besides creating upcycle design, Sledgecorner is also a sales agent representing several international upcycle brands.
“A little dream come true. Amazing people in a positive way! A goal which we appreciated when we started Sledgecorner. Sledgecorner will stimulate, challenge and be distinctive. Give space to everybody with a unique product!”
